Course Description:
Investigating the death of a child is one of the hardest duties an officer can be called upon to perform. Most would rather avoid such a difficult topic but our most vunerable citizens deserve a thorough and competent investigation conducted by a trained investigator.
This 8 hour course teaches students how to properly investigate the physical abuse of children with a focus on child homicide investigation, specifically equivocal child deaths. Many child abusers attempt to use routine household accidents as cover for their abuse, students will learn how to distinguish between intentional & accidentally caused injuries. Specific topics include: Abusive head trauma, Burn injuries, Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths & Crime Scene Documentation.
Students will learn advanced investigative techniques for handling these horrific crimes and be better able to determine the truth to hold offenders accountable. Case studies are used to show how the techniques apply in real world investigations.
