“To hear something with thoughtful attention, to give consideration” is how Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines listening. Yet many times when we say we are listening, what we are really doing is hearing the other person’s words through our own preconceived bias and notions. This tendency becomes particularly problematic when police officers are tasked with investigating sexual assault.
